With continuously evolving technology and industry needs, the field of biotechnology has seen tremendous growth in the last decade. Department of biotechnology at JIIT strives towards providing quality education and research to inculcate creative and innovative thinking among students who will become future leaders in academia and industry. The department offers B. Tech , M. Tech and PhD in biotechnology. The graduate and postgraduate curriculum provides breadth of courses that are contemporary, futuristic and flexible with continuously evolving curricula to incorporate the recent advancements in the field. The curriculum includes core courses like biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, molecular biology, genetic engineering, plant and animal tissue culture, immunology, bioinformatics, IPR, environmental biotechnology as well as specialised courses such as bioprocess engineering, industrial biotechnology, nanoscience in food technology, biosensors, stem cell biology, enzymes and bioprocess technology, food biotechnology, drug delivery, Natural products, Research Methodology and Data Validation, Molecular modelling and Drug design, Regulatory affairs, Drug Delivery, Genomics & Society, Product development in Biotechnology as electives.
At undergraduate as well as post graduate level, in addition to the core courses, students have the flexibility of choosing electives of their choice from departmental electives as well as open electives from other disciplines floated by respective departments at JIIT or through MOOC. JIIT also provides opportunity for achieving Proficiency certificate in Industrial Biotechnology, Medical Biotechnology, Plant and Microbial Biotechnology, Bio informatics, Environmental Biotechnology and Food Biotechnology through flexible credit-based system. Furthermore, students desirous of specialization in other engineering disciplines can opt for Minor specialization in Computer Science and Engineering and Information Technology by completing additional credits. Curriculum at JIIT has project-based learning component in each subject as well as Minor and Major Projects that gives exposure to students to work on various research problems.
The programs are reinforced by well-equipped laboratories giving hands on training opportunity to the students. The undergraduate and post graduate students get the benefit from PhD and research laboratories, in getting acquainted with high end instruments like HPLC, ACTA, ultra centrifuge, real time PCR, PCR, Gel Doc, Spectrophotometer, ELISA reader, electrochemical work station, fluorescence microscope, ultrasonic probe, ultrasonic bath, lyophilizer, FTIR etc. JIIT library has around 73 computers with high speed internet and LAN connectivity that enables students to access e-resources. Students can also access LRC resources through OPAC from anywhere which helped tremendously in continuing effective teaching and learning process during Covid epidemic. JIIT has best online resources with large number of textbooks, reference books (80522), peer-reviewed journals, magazines and electronic resources (333500) are available in the library. The teaching and research at department of biotechnology is strengthened by highly qualified and experienced faculty members from reputed institutes/university/industry. They actively engaged in research as well as teaching as evident from extramural grants of approximately ~10 Cr from Govt. funding agencies - Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR), Department of Science and Technology (DST), Council of Science and Technology, UP(UPCST), All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), and Department of AYUSH etc. and published research papers in national and international journals with high impact factors.
